>[!abstract] >**Ahiṃsā** is a fundamental principle of nonviolence toward all life forms in the Indian religion of Jainism. It prohibits five transgressions toward animals: tying them up too tightly, beating them, cutting their limbs, overloading them, and neglecting to feed them properly. It stems from ahiṃsā that all Jains must follow a strict vegetarian diet, also excluding "one-sensed" organisms that would be hurt by the consumption of their roots, bulbs, or seeds. Jains also refrain from using animal byproducts such as leather, unless it comes from an animal that died of natural causes. Violence is permissible only in the context of self-defense. >[!related] >- **North** (upstream): — >- **West** (similar): — >- **East** (different): — >- **South** (downstream): —
