There are activities where doing the bare minimum is exactly right (as in the above example of heating water to 100ºC to boil it). There are others where doing the bare minimum does not return the maximum benefits (e.g., professional work in a broad sense of advancing one's career; regardless of whether how quickly the returns diminish past the bare minimum). And there are activities where doing more than the bare minimum may be actively harmful (e.g., when taking the prescribed dose of medication).
