>We usually think of sacrifice as this noble act of selflessness, such as when a firefighter runs towards danger to save a victim’s life. But consider that the sacrifice is sometimes reluctant, as in victims of Aztec rituals; and sometimes utterly selfish, as when a suicide bomber detonates their explosive vest in a crowded market to be granted eternal life in Heaven. One could devise a parable of a terrorist blowing himself up (selfish sacrifice) in a crowded market (sacrificing unwilling participants) while police officers close in on the threat (selfless sacrifice), all at once.
