>The **ten stages of genocide** is an explanatory framework outlining warning signs and stages that societies may pass through on the path to genocide. It was devised by Gregory Stanton. The stages of genocide are not necessarily linear and may overlap.
## Ten stages
1. Classification (us vs them)
2. Symbolization (forcing symbols upon pariah groups)
3. Discrimination (exclusion laws or culture, e.g., segregation, apartheid, etc.)
4. Dehumanization (animals, vermin, etc.)
5. Organization (militias)
6. Polarization (attempts to stir extremism, arrests and murders of leaders, etc.)
7. Preparation (e.g., planning mass killings)
8. Persecution (e.g., ghettos, concentration camps)
9. Extermination
10. Denial (of having committed any crime)
