The stages of genocide are not necessarily linear and may overlap. ## Ten stages 1. Classification (us vs them) 2. Symbolization (forcing symbols upon pariah groups) 3. Discrimination (exclusion laws or culture, e.g., segregation, apartheid, etc.) 4. Dehumanization (animals, vermin, etc.) 5. Organization (militias) 6. Polarization (attempts to stir extremism, arrests and murders of leaders, etc.) 7. Preparation (e.g., planning mass killings) 8. Persecution (e.g., ghettos, concentration camps) 9. Extermination 10.
